"Grading on a curve" is a statistical method of assigning grades designed to yield a pre-determined distribution of grades among the students in a class.

In general, "grading on a curve" is the term used for a variety of different methods of adjusting a test grade in some way.  Teachers can then conclude if the tests are too easy or too hard.

There are many ways to grade on a curve.
Usually the teacher will adjust the score by adding more points or bumping up the letter grade.
However, each way has its benefits and drawbacks.

You can learn more about it by Googling the term.

"Students are usually evaluated as individuals and graded on a curve."

It means each student get a grade but the teacher will take the average of all the grades in the class and add points to each student's grade so their grade will become higher. This is usually done if the test is especially hard and most people didn't get a good grade.

Normally, the grades for a class are marked to follow a bell curve, by properly choosing the cut-off marks for each grade.  In this way, the number of students for each grade is to follow a pre-determined curve.

就是說學生個別衡量,然後按整體分佈評定等級。例如整體分佈只有最高百分之一拿甲等,如果大家分數都很高,那麼就算一個學生分數高,也未必能拿到甲等。等級是相對的,不是絕對的。
