I disagree that the passing of his wife will encourage him to retire.  I think the effect is just the opposite.  Since both their children (39 & 40 yrs old) are likely married and have their families, after his 67 yrs old wife Erin passed away, there is nobody home to attend to anymore.  That should encourage him to spend more times on his favorite sport and career (if his health allows).  Even if he was contemplating retirement before (to take care of his wife), now it will be different.
